Creekside Concert: Kerry Kearney with the Unsung Heroes

Join us for our first Creekside Concert of the season! Hear Kerry Kearney, a blues man and slide guitar master, who plays and works his instrument to limits that amaze even the most seasoned musician or cultured music fan. Bring a blanket, beach chair and a picnic basket down to the Creekside Lawn for a beautiful evening of music, dancing and good times! Food trucks and beverages will also be available.

Puppet Show & Puppet Making

Minkie & Friends puppet show & puppet making workshop with A Couple of Puppets from Goat on a Boat! Join Minkie the Monkey & Friends as they discover who has been eating all of the berries on the farm!! Puppet show appropriate for ages 1 and up. Puppet making to follow for kids 3-8 years and their families.

This event is presented in partnership with the Shelter Island Public Library.

Donations are requested but not required to attend the show and make puppets.

Creekside Concert: Los Hacheros

Come on down and cool off by the Creek for our August Concert. It’s going to be hot, hot, hot!! Los Hacheros revives folkloric styles like son montuno, guaracha and salsa, and often combine them with Bomba, a fiery rhythm from the mountains of Puerto Rico. Bring a blanket, beach chair and a picnic basket down to the Creekside Lawn for a beautiful evening of music, dancing and good times! Food trucks and beverages will also be available.

The community is invited to explore the historic grounds and gardens, take a self-guided house tour of the 2019 exhibition All That Has Been: Our Roots Revealed, featuring the return of previously excavated artifacts, walk through the woodlands with a visiting naturalist from Mashomack, experience a traditional wigwam built by members of the Shinnecock Nation, reflect at the Burying Ground of the Colored People and the Quaker Cemetery and learn more about the past, present and future of Sylvester Manor.

Salad greens from our farm will be served to all runners at the post-race bar-b-que and our farm crew will lead kids in a farm-inspired activity in the kids craft area. Exhibition Opening Reception

Join us to celebrate the opening of Sylvester Manor Educational Farm's 2019 exhibition, All That Has Been: Our Roots Revealed at the Exhibit Opening Reception. The opening reception features a preview of the exhibit, and a meet and greet with Stephen Mrozowski, Ph.D., professor of anthropology and director of the Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research at UMass Boston. Native American Wigwam Construction

On the Manor grounds, a Native American wigwam structure will be constructed by David Bunn Martine, a Shinnecock Nation Tribal member and artist. The wigwam, a traditional domed saucer shaped dwelling, used historically by Long Island Native Americans, will be constructed out of collected reeds and wooden poles from the property. Manor House tours and programs will highlight the culture and traditions of the local native peoples.

The Human Hands is an ensemble of acoustic musicians based in Brooklyn led by composer, accordionist, and pianist Sam Reider. The group will be performing two shows in the intimate setting of the Music Room at the Manor. Come listen to this jazz pianist, turns roots musician and get a taste for the irresistible melodies, fiery improvisation and otherworldly sounds this group of musicians are known for!

Seed Library Opening Talk

The Shelter Island Seed Library, a joint project of the Shelter Island Public Library and Sylvester Manor Educational Farm, is entering its fourth year. For this year’s Seed Library opening, Poet, Farmer and Educator Scott Chaskey, (author of Seedtime and other books) and Layton Guenther, Acting Director at Quail Hill Farm, will speak about the work they do and the importance of saving and sharing heirloom seeds. Jocelyn Craig, Windmill Field Manager at Sylvester Manor will also be there.
