Join us for discussions and a tour of the Manor house and the Dering family during the Revolutionary Wars Years.

This summer tour guests will view the first floor rooms of the Manor while we discuss the patriotic views of the Dering family in the lead up to the American Revolution and their time in exile that spanned from 1776-1783. During their time away, Shelter Island was subjugated by British forces and plundered for its natural resource of timber as well as Islanders’ livestock and crops.

Guests will also get a glimpse of the work being done in the house as we prepare for our upcoming restoration project. We will showcase select pieces from the Manor collection and share how we are taking steps to inventory and catalogue them before moving items out of the house to storage. As the manor house is emptied of furniture and possessions, visitors can imagine what life was like during the long years the Dering family were away in exile.
