James A. Gilbert, Farm Apprentice

James Gilbert came to Sylvester Manor in April, 2017 as a full-season apprentice. He has an Associates of Science degree in Horticulture from Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury, CT and has worked nursery/gardening jobs prior to coming to Shelter Island.

An avid student of permaculture design, James attended the Ecological Literacy Immersion Program (ELIP) at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY.  Pursuing this interest drew him to Sylvester Manor which he felt embodied many aspects of permaculture such as earth care, people care, and story of place.  James has also enjoyed the opportunity to meld his love of making music into farming through the ages-old tradition of worksongs, as practiced in the Manor fields.
